| School District cracks down on medical hardships for out-of-county students Thu, 26 Jun 2008 19:26:00 EST Leon County Schools is getting tougher on its policy when it comes to permitting students outside the district in based on medical hardship. During the School Board meeting earlier this week, a Gadsden County parent pleaded for the board to reconsider a denial for his son, who has severe asthma. Barbara Wills, executive director for planning and policy, said the parent wanted his son to remain at Kate Sullivan Elementary School because his son's pediatrician is in Tallahassee. She said he was concerned his son might have an attack and not be close enough to a medical facility if stayed in Gadsden County Schools. "He was denied because the Gadsden County School District can treat his illness just as well as we can," Wills said. She said the district has seen an increase in the number of medical hardship applications for out-of-county students. "We have been a little bit more flexible in the past and we're not able to do that as much," Wills said. "Our obligation is to treat students in Leon County." The district created a medical-review team in May that looks at all the applications. The team is made of an exceptional-student education representative, a nurse and two principals.
