| Keep an open mind on offshore drilling Thu, 10 Jul 2008 02:53:11 -0400 I just have a minor point in response to the July 1 editorial decrying offshore drilling entitled “Risky Business.” I applaud the editorial board for showing what Floridians have to lose if the law is changed. | Updated: Wanted man arrested after trying to hide out at Patients First in Tallahassee Fri, 11 Jul 2008 13:11:00 EST When Jerod Shamburger burst into the Patients First walk-in clinic on Mahan Drive shortly before noon, he told staff he needed to use the bathroom because he'd been chased by a dog. He didn't mention it was a police dog. "The gentleman came in looking like he was in bad shape," said Alan Dick, a patient who was in the waiting room at the time. He "asked to go into the bathroom because he was chased by a dog. He certainly looked like he was running for his life." Turns out, Shamburger, 24, was running from police because he had four outstanding warrants. He was arrested without incident in the clinic's bathroom, and taken to the Leon County Jail. "We went inside (the clinic) and found him cowering inside a small cabinet area under the sink," said David McCranie, a spokesman for the Police Department. The chase started when police got a call from someone who told them Shamburger was headed to the 1700 block of Marys Court. The caller was concerned that domestic violence might ensue, McCranie said. Police recognized the name because Shamburger had four outstanding warrants for failures to appear in court on charges related to driving infractions, resisting arrest without violence and marijuana possession. On the way there, a police officer saw Shamburger leaving a Shell station on Mahan Drive. He ran from police, and they tracked him with a dog through kudzu in the back of the station. A witness told police Shamburger had entered the clinic, McCranie said, and police evacuated the building and arrested him there. He was arrested on charges of fleeing police and burglary, because he entered the clinic with the intent to commit a crime, McCranie said. Dick, for his part, was unshaken but a little upset about having to wait longer than expected for his appointment. "It's been delayed," the computer operator said. "It's bad enough that you have to wait for your appointment." |
