Constructive summer on tap for The Hold Steady Thu, 24 Jul 2008 01:57:38 -0400 Life isn’t fair, and you need not tell this to The Hold Steady. In any justice–esteeming society, 2006’s critically adored “Boys and Girls in America,” an album crammed with hook–filled sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll throwbacks, would have landed the band the fanatical arena, following its unofficial designation as the scraggly incarnation of The E Street Band. Instead, they got a few nods in year–end polls and a billing on last year’s Lollapalooza poster that was only slightly more visible than The Fratellis.

Deregulation led to economic hangover Thu, 24 Jul 2008 01:53:43 -0400 The fact that most of us don’t hold a mortgage, work a full–time job or have kids to support makes it pretty easy to ignore the current economic crisis. It doesn’t help that for all but a few of us, economics is more boring than an episode of “Book TV” on C–SPAN 3 featuring an interview with Alan Greenspan.
Give CHOICES program chance to succeed Thu, 24 Jul 2008 01:58:32 -0400 In his July 22 column, Joshua Simmons illogically reasoned that low enrollment numbers in the CHOICES program could only mean that the program is “exactly the wrong model of health care” for Alachua County’s working poor. What Mr. Simmons has failed to consider is that low enrollment numbers may be a symptom of other problems, such as citizens simply being unaware of the program. Many social programs take a few years to get off the ground. This seems to be the case with CHOICES.

Tallahassee mother's house built with the environment in mind Sat, 26 Jul 2008 20:34:00 EST In a few short weeks, Tallahassee resident Karen Ray is going to move into her first home. But it's not just any home. It's a place that will save her money on heating, air and water bills. It's the first building built by Big Bend Habitat for Humanity that is considered a totally green home — meaning it's better for the environment. "Not only does it makes your utility bills less expensive, it creates a smaller carbon footprint," said Bill Stone, Big Bend Habitat for Humanity's construction superintendent. "The idea is to make it a healthy house for the homeowner and the community." To Ray, who works in the copy center at the Capitol, the home is an answer to a prayer. Once she moves in, the $250 utility bills that she currently pays will be a thing of the past. That bill will be replaced with a bill that will come from the green home — worth about $50 a month in the winter or summer, Ray said. "I am so excited it's ridiculous," she said. "I feel like I'm walking in answered prayer right now. It's all I can do not to cry every day." Return to Tallahassee.com for more details.

| Good presidents, good managers Sat, 26 Jul 2008 23:28:00 EST One of the wisest men I ever knew in Washington was the late James H. Rowe Jr. He came out of Montana, went to Harvard Law School and was recruited by Felix Frankfurter for a job on FDR's White House staff. | A win-win response to higher gas prices Sat, 26 Jul 2008 23:28:00 EST Faced with record-high gas prices and the November elections, not a day goes by without a politician's pitch to provide consumers with some relief — be it to permit offshore drilling, crack down on speculators, curb inventories in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve or grant a gas tax holiday. Yet each of these policies would have a negligible impact on gas prices. |
