| Presidential candidate McCain visits Florida Fri, 01 Aug 2008 17:05:00 EST PANAMA CITY BEACH — Gov. Charlie Crist and Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting Sen. John McCain appeared together today, but both remained mum about the possibility of Crist joining the national ticket as a vice presidential pick. McCain described the Florida governor as worthy of a national role in the Republican Party, but would not say he would be his vice presidential candidate. "This will be a battleground state," said McCain, with his wife standing beside him. "I believe I can win it but I have a lot of work to do." McCain spoke highly of Crist, describing him as a great environmentalist, but the Florida governor did not speak during the news conference at a hotel resort. This evening country music star John Rich will play at a McCain rally here and will debut a song called "Raising McCain." McCain, who appeared earlier in the day in Orlando, addressed offshore drilling, the success of the surge in Iraq and his Democratic opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, playing the race card. McCain said he was disappointed that Obama used the "race card," by claiming Republicans will try to scare voters by saying he doesn't look like presidents on dollar bills. While complaining that the Democrat-controlled Congress is moving too slow on high energy prices, McCain said Americans want offshore drilling. A poll released Thursday showed 60 percent of likely Florida voters support expanded oil exploration and drilling off the country's coasts and in Alaskan wilderness areas. "They want to drill now," he said. McCain also said oil company executives told him they could utilize existing facilities to increase oil supplies in months, helping to reduce gas prices more quickly than new exploration and drilling would require. Obama has said that even if offshore drilling was successful, it would take 10 years before it would enter world markets and have an effect on price. |

| Victim stops carjackers from getting his car Fri, 01 Aug 2008 10:40:00 EST A 34-year-old man was able to stop a carjacker from taking off when he jumped on the hood of his 2006 Nissan Altima, police said. David McCranie, spokesman for the Tallahassee Police Department, said the incident happened at 4 p.m. Thursday in the 800 block of Putnam Drive. He said two males, one between the ages of 15 and 18 and the other between 17 to 21, went to McCall Service, a pest control company on Paul Russell Road claiming they had car trouble. McCranie said the victim went with the two suspects because "he wanted to be nice." The victim drove the two males back to where they reported their car was on Putnam Drive. He got out and prepared to give a 2004 Toyota Camry a battery jump. Another man appeared and got in the victim's car and attempted to drive off. McCranie said the victim jumped on the hood of the car in an attempt to stop the carjacking. The suspect then swerved several times in an attempt to throw the victim off the car, McCranie said. The suspect eventually stopped the car and ran off with the two other suspects. No arrests have been made in this incident.
