| TCC crash survivor piecing her life back together Sun, 03 Aug 2008 11:49:00 EST The 4 a.m. darkness surrounded Julie Nguyen as she awakened outside in confusion, panic and pain. Blood dripped down her face from a gash in her forehead. Though it was hot outside, she felt colder than she'd ever been. She tried to scream, but there was no sound. She frantically looked around, but couldn't see anything. All she could hear were the words of a stranger: "Don't go to sleep — you might not wake up." Soon she could see the car she and three friends had been riding in. It was sitting on its roof beside Interstate 10. Nguyen, 20, a Tallahassee Community College student, suffered brain trauma and other injuries in the July 20 crash that killed Florida A&M student Nina Gilbert, 21, of Chicago. Also in the car were TCC students Camela Blanca Griffin, 19, of Lakeland, and Latoya Denan Barnes, 21, of Alexandria, Va. Monday night on FAMU's campus, they'll attend a memorial service for the senior broadcast student. Neither Barnes nor Griffin wanted to comment for this story. But Nguyen agreed to talk about how her life has changed. She mostly spends her days limping from couch to couch, trying to sleep, wondering when she can resume her studies and thinking about her friend. |
