Lollapalooza ‘08: Music and mayhem in the windy city Thu, 7 Aug 2008 02:13:25 -0400 “We’re from Oakland, Calif., but we love Chicago,” was the sentiment echoed by Zach Rogue after his band, Rogue Wave, ended their first song for Lollapalooza 2008. As tens of thousands descended upon Grant Park, it was hard to imagine anyone disagreeing with the statement. Lines were long and seat–saving situations grew tense, even downright nasty as the Chicago sun began to set. But these moments couldn’t ruin the eventful and eclectic weekend of music.

Bush, Cheney deserve impeachment Thu, 7 Aug 2008 02:11:26 -0400 Given their Nixon–esque polling numbers, it’s safe to say that President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney are not exactly the most popular pair to grace 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. In fact, only about 25 percent of people think our feckless leader is doing a good job. Incidentally, the same percentage of people predicted that the second coming of Jesus would occur in 2007. I’ve got a hunch that there’s a lot of overlap in those two groups.

'Noles offensive line young, but impressive Sun, 10 Aug 2008 17:09:00 EST Florida State senior quarterback Drew Weatherford admits he was "concerned" about the Seminoles' young offensive line heading into preseason practice. Understandably so. The only starters returning to the line in 2008 are true sophomores Ryan McMahon and Rodney Hudson. Other than those two, who were both freshman All-Americans last season, there are question marks and inexperience lining up everywhere else in front of the QB. Through the first three days of fall practice though, Weatherford said he has been quite impressed with how quickly the newcomers have been picking things up. "I was really, really surprised," he said with a smile. "And happy." McMahon, who started all 13 games at center in 2007, said on Sunday that he thinks the offensive line has a chance to be very good, very early. "We're real strong," he said. "The main thing is everybody is tough and works hard and has a good work ethic. So we're able to get a lot done. "We're trying to get good habits and build off of those." Hudson, who has moved back to guard after working at tackle in the spring, said the newcomers aren't close to being comfortable yet with their techniques or their assignments. But that hasn't slowed down their effort at all. "When they make mistakes, they make them fast," Hudson said. "If you're going to make a mistake, at least make it fast. As a young guy, if you just play hard and learn the playbook it will come to you. The more and more you play, the playbook starts to make a lot more sense to you." Hudson, the wily, grizzled veteran who just turned the ripe old age of 19 on July 12, and McMahon are the only experienced linemen in a group that consists of five true freshmen, three redshirt freshmen and JUCO transfer Joe Tonga, who arrived in Tallahassee just three days before the start of preseason campus. "We don't have any juniors or seniors," McMahon said. "That's crazy. But we've just got to work hard and listen to what (offensive line coach Rick) Trickett says. We've got to step up and help the young guys. They've been coming along really good."

Cade Zimmerman's blog from Beijing Sun, 10 Aug 2008 16:30:00 EST Today, I cheered on Hungary in water polo against their rival Montenegro. Montenegro is a new country which used to be part of Yugoslavia. According to my new Hungarian friend, Attila, this is his country's Dream Team. He explained that Hungary is small and very proud of their water polo team since it is one of the sports they can excel and often win a gold medal. Attila taught me how to yell in Hungarian, and I taught him how to high five. In the preliminary round, Hungary and Montenegro tied. Attila is worried his team may not keep its gold medal. Attila was one of Hungary's best wrestlers leading into the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Right before the Olympics he ripped his quad and his dreams of being an Olympian were gone Now he watches his team as a spectator and is enjoying Beijing. I am meeting amazing people at the Olympics from places which I have only read about. The Games really do bring the world together.
