FAMU continues negotiations with DRS faculty Fri, 15 Aug 2008 00:23:00 EST More than a year has passed since negotiations over teachers' salaries at Florida A&M's K-12 school began between university administrators and faculty on the bargaining teams. Wednesday, FAMU President James Ammons offered hope that talks to increase teachers' pay were nearing an end with positive results for faculty at FAMU's Developmental Research School. However, contract talks are not over, administrators say. DRS faculty members have asked to earn salaries comparable with other teachers in Leon County. FAMU DRS teachers' average salaries are $10,000 less than Leon County school teachers, according to the Florida Department of Education records. Arnett Moore, a faculty member who represents the school's bargaining team as part of the United Faculty of Florida, wouldn't go into detail. He did say, however, that the two teams have agreed on other issues like promotions. The only other remaining factor is salaries, he said. "There are still some details to iron out," Moore said about salaries. "I think the president (Ammons) is making a valid attempt to do some of the things that need to be done at the research school." Moore added that he hopes negotiations, which started in March 2007, will be over soon. Teachers at the DRS haven't received pay increases since 2006. FAMU's chief negotiator Mike Mattimore is hopeful about the completion of the process. "Everything has been resolved with the exception of the wage issue," Mattimore said. "We're on the brink of formalizing an agreement."

Retirees reflect on their time with the school district and first day of school next week Thu, 14 Aug 2008 21:07:00 EST For retirees, next week's start of a new school year means something different for each of them. They won't have to get up early or fight the traffic that clogs the roads near schools. There's no wondering if a child has gotten on the right bus. There won't be moments where they'll have to comfort parents who will see their children off to kindergarten for the first time. Nearly 200 employees retired during the 2007-2008 school year, and they range from teachers, principals, administrators, bus drivers and support staff. While some retirees are enjoying the less hectic side of life now, others admit they're going to miss not being at school during the first day. "I won't be there to say, 'Hello. Good morning. How are you? Did you do any reading over the summer," said Janis Johnson, who was the principal at DeSoto Trail before she retired with 38 years with the district. Many of the retirees are soaked with institutional knowledge of the district and public education. While school officials are getting ready for the first big day Monday, they are also making plans to address the number of retirees who are on the verge of leaving the district. Check back at www.tallahassee.com for more updates.

Tree problems often show up in summer Wed, 13 Aug 2008 20:45:00 EST It is that time of year again when I begin getting an overwhelming number of calls on tree problems. Many insect and disease problems have had sufficient time to develop and damage trees. Non-biological stresses such as lightning, drought and heat also have weakened some trees. During the summer, temperatures are high and the physiological process of trees such as transpiration and respiration are running at peak rates. So if any part of a tree (roots, etc.) is compromised, the tree quickly can become overwhelmed and begin to decline. Over time this decline can get to the point where we see visible signs of damage, including changing leaf color, loss of leaves or sap (often discolored) oozing from a tree.
