Lollapalooza ‘08: Music and mayhem in the windy city Thu, 7 Aug 2008 02:13:25 -0400 “We’re from Oakland, Calif., but we love Chicago,” was the sentiment echoed by Zach Rogue after his band, Rogue Wave, ended their first song for Lollapalooza 2008. As tens of thousands descended upon Grant Park, it was hard to imagine anyone disagreeing with the statement. Lines were long and seat–saving situations grew tense, even downright nasty as the Chicago sun began to set. But these moments couldn’t ruin the eventful and eclectic weekend of music.

Bush, Cheney deserve impeachment Thu, 7 Aug 2008 02:11:26 -0400 Given their Nixon–esque polling numbers, it’s safe to say that President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney are not exactly the most popular pair to grace 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. In fact, only about 25 percent of people think our feckless leader is doing a good job. Incidentally, the same percentage of people predicted that the second coming of Jesus would occur in 2007. I’ve got a hunch that there’s a lot of overlap in those two groups.

Updated: Dix wins bronze medal at Summer Olympics Sat, 16 Aug 2008 08:36:00 EST Coach Bob Braman watched Walter Dix excel on collegiate track's biggest stage year after year. Although his eight-time NCAA champion had never competed in a world championship before, Braman was confident that Dix could do something big at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The FSU graduate did just that in the event that is not his strongest. Dix ran a personal best of 9.91 today to earn a bronze medal in the 100 meters at the Olympics. "One could make the case that Walt's the most clutch performer on the U.S. squad," said Braman, whose FSU men's teams have won three consecutive NCAA outdoor titles. "He runs his best on the biggest stage. He always has. "It's pretty amazing." Dix became just the second former FSU male track athlete to win a medal at the Olympics. Walter McCoy was a member of the winning 4x400 relay in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Three former FSU women have won medals in track and field at previous Olympic Games -- Marita Payne, representing Canada in 1984, Michelle Finn in 1992 and Kim Batter in 1996. "I couldn't be more satisfied," Dix said after the race. "I came there and medaled. I didn't start the way I wanted to but I came on strong at the end." Dix was the lone American among the medalists — joining winner Usain Bolt of Jamaica and runner up Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago. Bolt broke his own world record in the event with a stunning 9.69 that probably could have been even better if he had not started celebrating during the final 20 meters. "Fantastic for Walt," said Braman, "and good for Florida State. "Not a horrible start but a fantastic finish. He caught everybody except Bolt who was gone. He almost caught Thompson (the NCAA 2008 champ from LSU) at the wire and beat Asafa Powell." Braman was forced along with other track and field fans to turn to the Internet to watch the 100 meter finals live. NBC and its related-networks chose to televise the Olympic tennis, the Argentina-Netherlands soccer game, the USA in basketball and an info-commercial. Even before that, Braman didn't believe Dix was receiving enough love from the network of the Olympic Games. "Bob Costas didn't mention his name one time," Braman said. "It was the two Jamaicans against Tyson Gay." But it was Dix who won a medal. Gay, who injured his hamstring in the 200 meters at the Olympic Trials, did not reach the finals on Saturday. Next up for Dix is the 200 meters, which gets under way on Monday. He also has a good shot at being named to the 4x100 relay team.

Updated: Back-to-school event attracts thousands Sat, 16 Aug 2008 00:48:00 EST A massive school-supplies giveaway today at the Jake Gaither Community Center attrached thousands of people. Getting pens, paper, crayons and binders for free in time for the start of the school year was the highlight, but that was not all there was to it. Families were treated to free food and live entertainment from the Rickards High School marching band and the Boys' Choir of Tallahassee. "In the midst of the rain, it's working out really well," said Ramon Alexander, regional co-chair of the Big Bend Region Mentoring Initiative, which put on the event in partnership with the city of Tallahassee. The center's main entrance was converted into a mini barber shop, where children could get their hair cut at no cost. Another room was reserved for doing braids. "Being that haircuts for kids are now $10 a piece, I took advantage of it," said Ericka Law, who brought her three children to the event. The center's gym was a madhouse, packed with families waiting in line for school supplies. But to get the freebies, families had to get vouchers signed by visiting at least eight of the informational booths, said organizer Melinda Harris. The booths were outside under blue-striped tents and featured information about local colleges, non-profit organizations and businesses. "We want them to know what is available to them," Harris said. The organization also had a booth set up to recruit mentors. The goal of the iniative is to recruit 4,000 black mentors by 2010. The organization advertised for the event with public-service announcements and fliers and by visiting open houses at local schools, but many people heard about the event by word of mouth, Harris said. "Our goal hear is to serve," she said. Janice Iverson heard about the event from her neighbor. She stood in the gym, her arms weighed down by plastic bags filled with school supplies, while her two children waited in line to have their faces painted by a woman dressed as a clown. She said: "It's just a great event for those who are unfortunate and can't get all this stuff."
